Former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa has been admitted to the Cardiology Unit of the National Hospital in Colombo, according to reports. She is in remand custody at Welikada Prison.

The Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court on Monday rejected an anticipatory bail application filed on her behalf, which sought an order to prevent her arrest.

Rajapaksa, the wife of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, was arrested by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) on 7 October. The Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court later remanded her until 13 October.

Her arrest relates to allegations that Rs. 10 million was obtained from the National Savings Bank (NSB) through the Siriliya Saviya organisation, purportedly to buy a CT scanner for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children.

She is due to appear before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court when the remand period ends on 13 October.
