The Police Special Task Force (STF) has recovered more than 100 kilograms of heroin from Kapparatota Beach in Weligama in the Southern Province, the Government Information Department said.

The department identified the seized stock as heroin and said it weighed over 100 kilograms.

The recovery follows earlier reports that six sacks weighing more than 120 kilograms, suspected to contain narcotics, were found along the coast at Mirissa in Matara. Reports said five suspects had been taken into custody in connection with that discovery.

The sacks found at Mirissa and the heroin recovered at Weligama have not been officially linked in the information available so far.

Large seizures along the southern coast are closely watched by residents and the authorities because the area is on a route used for drug smuggling by sea.

Further details of the investigation are expected to be released by the police.
