Justice and National Integration Minister Harshana Nanayakkara has said a mechanism has been introduced to cut delays in issuing Government Analyst reports to three months by 31 January 2027.

He spoke during an inspection visit to the Government Analyst’s Department in Battaramulla on Friday, where he reviewed progress on reports relating to narcotic substances.

Officials told the minister that reports on narcotic samples weighing less than five grams, received up to August 2026, have been completed. Work on the remaining reports has been speeded up under a special programme to clear the backlog.

Nanayakkara said timely reports are needed to speed up court proceedings and ease prison overcrowding. He said staff shortages and limited facilities had earlier caused delays, and that the government had filled vacancies, upgraded facilities and begun paying allowances to staff on night shifts.

Acting Government Analyst Kamini Perera and other department officials were present during the visit.
