The Irrigation Department has opened four radial gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir, releasing water at 4,200 cubic feet per second (cusecs), it said on Friday.
At 7.00 p.m. on 9 October, the water level stood at 70.72 metres above mean sea level. The reservoir’s full supply level is 70.79 metres.
Two of the gates have been opened by 24 inches each and the other two by 12 inches each. Irrigation Director (Water Management) Engineer H.M.P.S.D. Hearth said the reservoir held 59,651 acre-feet of water at that time.
Gates are normally opened when a reservoir approaches its full supply level, so that excess water can be released in a controlled way. Residents living along the Deduru Oya may wish to follow further announcements from the Irrigation Department.
