Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay inaugurated the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2 in Chennai on Sunday.
The two leaders travelled together on a train on the new section. The elevated stretch of about 15 kilometres cost 4,900 crore Indian rupees and has 11 stations. It forms part of Corridor 4 of the project and includes a 3.7-kilometre double-decker corridor.
The section is expected to improve links between Chennai’s western suburbs and the city centre. Chennai is a frequent destination for Sri Lankan travellers going for business, education and medical care.
Passenger services began on Sunday afternoon. From Monday, trains will run daily from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
