Turkey will ban children under 15 from using social media from 1 November, according to a notice published in the country’s official state journal on Saturday.
Parliament passed the law in April. It requires social media providers to “take the necessary technical and administrative measures, including age verification” to protect children. The law also states that “no service likely to produce an addictive effect in children may be offered”.
Australia has already introduced restrictions on social media use by children, and Britain and France are among the countries pushing for similar measures. Governments backing such limits have cited concerns over screen addiction, sleep deprivation, online bullying and eating disorders.
The ban takes effect on 1 November.
