The Irrigation Department said spill gates have been opened at three major reservoirs, while two other major reservoirs and two medium-sized reservoirs are spilling.

In its water management report issued at 12.30 p.m. on 11 October, the department said gates were open at the Yan Oya and Rajangana reservoirs in Anuradhapura District and the Deduru Oya reservoir in Kurunegala District.

Deduru Oya recorded the highest discharge at 2,800 cusecs, followed by Rajangana at 502 cusecs and Yan Oya at 67.7 cusecs.

The Kande Ela tank in Nuwara Eliya District and Wan Ela in Trincomalee District were also spilling. Among medium-sized reservoirs, Bomuruella in Badulla District and Denagama Wewa in Galle District were spilling.

The department said the effective storage of the 74 major reservoirs it manages stood at 35 percent of total capacity.

It urged people living downstream of reservoirs that are spilling or have open gates to watch river water levels and follow instructions from the department and local authorities.
