Construction of 124 houses for families whose homes were completely destroyed by Cyclone Ditwah has begun in three divisional secretariat divisions of Badulla District.

Foundation stones were laid on 8 October under a government housing programme. Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Vidyarathna led the ceremonies.

The project covers 62 houses in Hali-Ela, 27 in Badulla and 35 in Passara. The sites are at Kothmallanda in Hali-Ela, Thelbedda in Badulla and Blanewatta in the Pallegolla Grama Niladhari Division of Passara.

The government will provide the land. The programme aims to give displaced families safe, permanent housing.

Badulla District Secretary Sunil Galagama, divisional secretaries, local council chairpersons, officials and residents attended the ceremonies.
