A proposal to appoint a parliamentary select committee to study the 1983 Black July violence was handed to the Deputy Speaker on Friday (9 October).

The proposal carries the signatures of 51 government MPs.

The committee would examine the events surrounding Black July and submit its findings and recommendations to Parliament.

Black July refers to the anti-Tamil violence that erupted in Sri Lanka in July 1983, a major escalation in ethnic tensions in the country.

The proposal now awaits consideration in Parliament.
