The Constitutional Council (CC) approved Dr. Hemamal Jayawardene as a commissioner of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka on Friday.
Dr. Jayawardene and Dr. Jehan Perera received four votes each, and Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne cast the deciding vote in favour of Dr. Jayawardene, according to sources cited by the Daily Mirror.
The same sources said Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa, Ajith P. Perera, S. Sritharan and civil member Austin Fernando voted for Dr. Perera.
Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Leader of the House Bimal Ratnayake, MP Aboobucker Athambawa and civil member Wasantha Seneviratne voted for Dr. Jayawardene, the sources said.
