The Department of Meteorology has issued red alerts for severe lightning in 17 districts and amber alerts in eight others on Wednesday.
The advisory covers the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North Western and Southern provinces, as well as the Anuradhapura and Mannar districts. It remains in effect until 1.00 am on Thursday.
The department said thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several places in the affected districts. Temporary, localised strong winds may also occur during the thundershowers.
The department asked the public to take adequate precautions to minimise damage from lightning.
