Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment Upali Pannilage said the government aims to eradicate poverty within the current generation.

In a message for the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Saturday, he said ending poverty remains a key priority of the National People’s Power (NPP) government.

Pannilage said the ‘Praja Shakthi’ National Programme seeks to empower rural communities by identifying their needs and improving living standards. He said Rs. 25 billion has been allocated for it under the 2026 Budget.

The Minister said at least one development project would be implemented in every Grama Niladhari Division. He said the approach focuses on self-employment, income-generating opportunities and sustainable livelihoods, rather than financial assistance alone.

He added that government institutions, the private sector, civil society organisations and local communities would need to work together.
