The Cabinet of Ministers has approved new regulations that set up a formal system to govern the livelihood activities of indigenous communities in designated areas.

The Wildlife and Flora (Regulation of Activities of Indigenous Peoples in Designated Areas) Regulations have been drafted under the Wildlife and Flora Protection Ordinance (Chapter 469). They will allow members of registered indigenous communities to take part in designated activities in the relevant areas, provided the activities follow existing laws.

The regulations are meant to give greater recognition and protection to rights on State land that are considered fundamental to the existence and traditional livelihoods of indigenous communities. The rights are recognised under law, custom, usage and traditional practices.

Cabinet approved a proposal by the Minister of Environment to publish the regulations in the Government Gazette and then submit them to Parliament.
