Permanent repairs to the Badulu Oya Irrigation Scheme, which was badly damaged in the Ditwah disaster, have reached their final stage after four months of work.

A 2km section of the main canal has been fully repaired and lined with concrete. Irrigation Department staff and engineers completed the work with a limited workforce.

The restored scheme feeds more than 1,775 acres of farmland. The repairs are meant to end the water shortages that farmers in the area have faced.

Permanent reconstruction began on 5 June under Plantation and Community Infrastructure Minister Samantha Vidyaratne. Before that, water was distributed using sandbags as a temporary measure from January.

A team led by Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs Dinindu Saman Hennayake visited the site recently to inspect progress.
