An expert committee has submitted its report on public views and proposals for reviewing Sri Lanka’s election laws to the Parliamentary Select Committee examining those laws.

The committee was set up to study 31 proposals from members of the public, institutions and organisations, together with reports of earlier parliamentary select committees on election matters. Laws governing provincial council elections are not covered by the review.

Prof. Chandana Abayarathna, Minister of Public Administration, Provincial Councils and Local Government, who chairs the select committee, received the report. He said separate reports had been prepared on the issues raised by organisations and institutions, and that several registered political parties had also sent in their views.

The select committee plans to examine all submissions and present an interim report to Parliament within two months. The public will get a further chance to submit amendments and new proposals after that report is tabled, he said.

The committee has also extended by two weeks the deadline for registered political parties to send in their views and proposals.
