Sri Lanka Army personnel have been deployed to the Thambuttegama Base Hospital to keep essential healthcare services running after the hospital’s minor staff began a strike on Tuesday.
The Army said in a statement that the strike, which started on 13 October, affected normal operations at the hospital.
Troops were sent at the request of the Provincial Director of Health Services, on instructions from Security Force Headquarters (Wanni). The Army said its personnel are taking the measures needed to support essential services.
Patients who depend on the hospital for treatment are the people most likely to be affected while the strike continues.
The statement did not say how long the troops would remain or when the strike might end.
