BYD and its authorised distributor John Keells CG Auto launched the BYD RACCO in Sri Lanka on Wednesday, making the island the first country outside Japan to receive the model.
The car went on sale in Japan in July, where it has sold more than 1,500 units, the companies said. It was unveiled at the same time in Colombo, Kandy and Galle.
John Keells CG Auto Chief Executive Officer Charith Panditharatne said BYD is entering the KEI car segment in Sri Lanka, a category already popular with local buyers. He described the RACCO as a family vehicle that is cheap to own and run, and said it also suits small businesses.
For buyers, the launch adds another compact electric option to the market. Prices were not given in the announcement.
The RACCO is available at BYD showrooms in Colombo, Kandy, Kurunegala, Galle, Ampara, Rathnapura, Moratuwa, Negombo, Batticaloa and Jaffna.
