The Ministry of Environment has asked the public to avoid gathering near the place where the elephant Kawanthissa, who remains in critical condition, is being treated.

In a statement, the Ministry said specialist veterinary teams from the Department of Wildlife Conservation were working around the clock. They are giving the elephant saline and essential medications and carrying out medical procedures to stabilise his condition.

The Ministry said large gatherings near the treatment area could cause the elephant severe stress and disrupt the procedures. According to wildlife veterinarians, a quiet and calm environment is essential to stabilise his heart rate, blood pressure and physical responses.

The Ministry asked people not to enter the treatment area unnecessarily, gather nearby, make excessive noise or operate drone cameras, and to let the veterinary teams work without interference.
