The Cabinet has approved a new ferry that can carry about 150 passengers at a time for the Delft–Jaffna sea route, the government said.

The vessel will be built by C-NOR Foundation Limited. The Delft Development Society, set up under the Department of Samurdhi Development, will operate it.

The project falls under the government’s Praja Shakthi National Programme. The government said existing facilities are not enough to carry larger numbers of passengers safely between the mainland and islands such as Delft.

Revenue from the service is expected to support livelihood development among low-income families in Delft, including members of the Development Society.

The Cabinet approved a proposal submitted by the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources.
