A traveller returning from Sri Lanka to Australia declared fridge magnets made from elephant dung, and the items were not permitted into the country.

The traveller voluntarily disposed of the magnets before leaving the airport.

Animal waste products can carry pests, parasites and diseases that pose a risk to Australia’s agriculture, environment and native wildlife. They can also contain bacteria, insect larvae or weed seeds that could affect livestock health or introduce invasive plants.

For Sri Lankan sellers and visitors, the case is a reminder that handmade souvenirs made from animal products may face strict biosecurity checks abroad.

Travellers heading to Australia are advised to declare all such items on arrival. A souvenir sold as a gift is not necessarily safe to bring home.
