The Department of Meteorology has warned of heavy rainfall of up to 150 mm in several provinces as a low-pressure area is likely to form over the southeastern Bay of Bengal by 13 October.

Rainfall is expected to increase across the island and in the sea areas around Sri Lanka over the next few days, beginning on 13 October. Showers or thundershowers are likely in most parts of the country.

Falls of between 100 mm and 150 mm are likely at some locations in the Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and Southern provinces. Rainfall exceeding 75 mm is also expected at some locations elsewhere, the department said.

It urged the public, as well as naval and fishing communities, to stay alert to later forecasts and advisories on the developing system. The public was also advised to take precautions against damage from temporary, localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.

Misty conditions may occur at some locations in the Sabaragamuwa, Central and Uva provinces during the early hours of the morning, the department said.
