The Department of Meteorology has issued a red heavy rain warning for parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces and the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts, valid until 6:30 p.m. on 13 October.
The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre issued the bulletin at 6:30 p.m. on 12 October. It said showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island, and rainfall above 100 mm is likely at some places under the red warning, which carries the instruction to take action.
An amber advisory, which indicates moderate risk, has been issued for the remaining areas shown in the bulletin.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to stay alert for heavy downpours and related hazards while the warning remains in force.
