Energy Minister Anura Karunathilake said on Monday there is no impending fuel shortage in Sri Lanka and urged the public not to panic buy because of rumours on social media.
Speaking to the media in Colombo, he said excessive purchases and stockpiling could worsen temporary supply disruptions. He asked consumers to buy only the fuel they need.
Karunathilake said there had been a minor disruption in fuel availability early in the week, but the situation was stabilising as several companies resumed distribution.
He said the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) was prepared to maintain an uninterrupted supply. Private fuel companies are free to operate and set their own prices, while the CPC remains committed to supplying fuel at reasonable prices, he said.
The Minister made the remarks after attending the 37th Annual General Meeting of the Container Transport Owners’ Association in Colombo.
