US President Donald Trump said on Sunday 11 October that Russia and Ukraine had agreed to an “energy ceasefire”, but Ukraine reported Russian attacks on energy sites after his statement.

Trump’s social media post gave no details. It said only that the ceasefire took effect immediately and added: “Do not break it!” Moscow did not immediately comment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv welcomed the announcement as “good news for everyone”. He said Russia was still striking energy infrastructure in Kyiv and Kharkiv, and the presidential office confirmed that a power plant in Kharkiv was attacked after Trump’s post.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine was ready to refrain from striking Russian energy infrastructure and counted on the same from Russia.

Energy prices respond to the war, and Sri Lanka imports all of its crude oil, so developments affecting fuel supply can influence costs here.

The war is now in its fifth year. No date has been given for any further talks.
