The Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID) has told the Matara Magistrate’s Court that it will take steps to suspend the use of a property in Browns Hill, Matara, allegedly owned by former Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

The land, about one and a half acres on Eliyakanda Road, is reportedly used for coconut cultivation. The court was told it was earlier owned by a German national, Herbert Keller.

The FCID alleges that Rajapaksa later bought the property for about Rs. 60 million. The division is examining how it was acquired.

The case is part of an FCID investigation into assets allegedly linked to the former minister. Court orders on suspending use of a property can affect who may farm or earn income from the land while a case continues.

The court is expected to consider the FCID’s submissions at a later date.
