Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) Leader Rauff Hakeem questioned the Government’s handling of Iranian vessels stranded off Sri Lanka during a speech in Parliament on Tuesday.

Hakeem said the Government had directed companies not to supply the vessels. He asked how that fitted with Sri Lanka’s earlier position against unilateral measures at the United Nations.

“At the United Nations, they signed an agreement proposed by them, saying, ‘We are against these unilateral measures.’ After saying that, what are they doing here now?” Hakeem said.

He also asked whether the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna-led Government was departing from its stated stand against imperialism.

The vessels are outside Sri Lanka’s territorial waters. The Government has said it has not provided supplies or facilities to them and that it received no direction from the United States on the matter.
