More than 100 kilos of heroin were recovered from Kapparathota Beach in Weligama on Thursday morning, following information obtained from five suspects apprehended by the Navy.
The detection was made during a joint operation involving the Navy, the Police and several other security agencies. According to the Navy, the Police Special Task Force took part in the operation.
Further details, including the identities of the suspects and the origin of the consignment, were not available at the time of writing.
Suspects in drug cases are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
