Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism Minister Vijitha Herath met Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev in Baku to discuss closer bilateral cooperation.
The talks covered trade, investment, tourism and energy, with a focus on the supply of oil and gas.
Herath is leading Sri Lanka’s delegation to the 7th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held in Baku on 14 and 15 October. He is due to deliver Sri Lanka’s country statement under the theme “Stronger CICA: Connectivity, Digitalisation and Sustainable Growth in Asia”.
For readers in Sri Lanka, any new source of oil and gas supply could matter for fuel and power costs, although no agreement has been announced.
Herath is also scheduled to hold bilateral talks with representatives of Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan, Azerbaijani officials and the CICA Secretary-General. CICA is a regional forum that promotes cooperation, peace, security and stability across Asia.
