The Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) held a programme at Kanagarathnam Maha Vidyalayam in Jaffna on 10 October to inform young people in the Northern Province about overseas job opportunities.

Fisheries, Aquatic and Marine Resources Minister Ramalingam Chandrasekaran presided over the event. Nearly 20 licensed foreign employment agencies took part and gave information on jobs in Europe, the Middle East and other destinations.

Vocational training institutes and banks offering pre-departure loan facilities also attended. Participants could consult licensed agencies directly about jobs matching their qualifications and skills.

A separate awareness session covered recruitment procedures and jobs in Japan. A “migrant market” also promoted products made by returned migrant workers who have started their own businesses.

The SLBFE said the event was part of an island-wide initiative to give prospective migrant workers information on foreign employment.
