Sri Lanka and the European Union have discussed a proposed green energy hub at Trincomalee Port, with Minister of Ports, Civil Aviation and Energy Anura Karunathilaka stressing the need for a feasibility study.

The talks were held at the Ministry between Karunathilaka and an EU delegation led by Peteris Ustubs, Director for the Asia-Pacific region.

The delegation welcomed the Government’s work on renewable energy generation and energy storage, and said it was interested in supporting Sri Lanka’s transition to green energy.

Karunathilaka briefed the delegation on renewable energy projects now under way. The two sides also discussed developing container terminals to raise the capacity and efficiency of the Port of Colombo.

They also discussed possible EU support for port projects under the EU’s Global Gateway programme. Deputy Minister Janitha Ruwan Kodithukku and Ministry Secretary W.W.S. Mangala also took part.

No funding figures or dates were given. The feasibility study for the Trincomalee hub is the next step raised in the talks.
