French unions said around 480,000 people took part in nationwide demonstrations on Tuesday in support of student protests.

French authorities have not yet given their own estimate of the turnout.

The previous nationwide rallies backing the student movement were held on Thursday last week, 8 October. The interior ministry said 71,500 people turned out for those.

Clashes involving tear gas were reported on Tuesday in Paris.
