Sri Lanka has sent 498 more security personnel to Haiti to join the Gang Suppression Force (GSF) mission this week, the Ministry of Defence said.

A contingent of 218 left on 16 October. It comprises 173 Sri Lanka Army soldiers and 45 Special Task Force (STF) personnel.

Another 280 Army personnel, including 21 officers and 259 other ranks, departed on 14 October.

The new arrivals will join the Sri Lankan contingent already serving in Haiti. Troops there carry out security operations, including armoured vehicle patrols and the protection of key supply routes.

Separately, the Sri Lanka Army provided accommodation, meals and transport to a 50-member Bangladeshi contingent passing through Sri Lanka to join the same mission. The Bangladeshi personnel arrived on 15 October.

The deployments form part of Sri Lanka’s continuing role in international efforts to address gang violence in Haiti.
