Sri Lanka and Lithuania have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Colombo to set up regular political consultations, as the two countries mark 30 years of diplomatic ties.

The MoU was signed during a visit from 4 to 6 October by Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs, Vidmantas Verbickas, at the invitation of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Arun Hemachandra, the Consulate of the Republic of Lithuania in Sri Lanka said in a statement.

The two men co-chaired the first formal political consultations between the countries. Talks covered trade, investment, tourism and cooperation at the United Nations.

The delegation also met Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne to discuss digital public services, government technology and artificial intelligence. It visited GovTech Sri Lanka and met the Sri Lanka Association for Software and Services Companies (SLASSCOM).

Verbickas also gave a lecture at the University of Colombo, where the consulate said links between universities and research institutions could follow.

For Sri Lanka, the framework gives a direct channel to a European Union member state on trade, technology and education.
