A shop in Bandarawela and a company in Nittambuwa have been fined a total of Rs. 240,000 after pleading guilty to selling and making plastic drinking bottles without the required Sri Lanka Standards (SLS) mark.

The Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court imposed the fines on 7 October in a case filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA).

CAA officers from the Badulla District found reusable 1.2-litre plastic bottles on sale at Rs. 295 each without the SLS 1616 mark during a raid on 24 September 2026. The shop was charged with selling them, and the company with manufacturing and distributing them without certification.

The shop also faced charges over electrical extension cords without the required SLS mark and over failing to charge customers for carrier bags.

The charges were filed under Directions No. 96 and No. 95 of Extraordinary Gazette No. 2492/29, issued on 10 June 2026, which cover reusable plastic drinking bottles and carrier bags.
