A second S8 train set that has been fully refurbished at the Ratmalana Railway Workshop is ready to enter service, Deputy Minister of Transport Prasanna Gunasena said.

He said the S8-831 set completed a test run on 14 August. The refurbishment programme repairs entire train sets, rather than refurbishing engines and carriages separately. A further set, S8-830, has also undergone a test run, he said.

Another train was earlier refurbished at the Aluthgama Railway Yard. Together, three refurbished trains have been added to service this year, the Deputy Minister said.

For commuters, the latest set is expected to run on Colombo suburban railway lines in the near future, he said.
