The government has decided to give a Rs. 6,000 school stationery allowance to 1.5 million schoolchildren for the 2027 academic year.
The Cabinet of Ministers granted its concurrence after a briefing by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance.
One million children from families enrolled in the Aswesuma welfare programme will receive Rs. 6,000 by direct transfer to their bank accounts. Another 500,000 children identified by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education will receive vouchers worth Rs. 6,000 each for stationery.
The allowance has been provided since 2025 to help families meet the cost of school supplies. The President told the Cabinet that the necessary steps would be taken to continue it in 2027.
