A restaurant owner was shot dead and his wife seriously injured when two gunmen opened fire outside their restaurant in Nagoda, Kalutara, on Friday morning, police said.

According to police, the attackers arrived on a motorcycle, shot at the couple and fled. The man died after the shooting. His wife was admitted to the Nagoda Teaching Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicate that a T-56 assault rifle was used in the attack. Police said the motive has not yet been established.

The Kalutara Crimes Division, the Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit, crime scene investigators and Kalutara South Police are conducting further investigations.

No arrests had been reported at the time of writing.
