A 14-year-old pupil was arrested after a head teacher and a teacher were shot at Lakanal middle school in Aubagne, near Marseille in southern France, on Monday morning.
Regional officials told French media the boy entered the school with a shotgun in a guitar case and opened fire before a member of staff restrained him in a corridor. Police took him into custody.
Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said no children were harmed and that the teachers’ injuries were not life-threatening. The head teacher, 53, was reportedly shot in the leg and lower back, and the 37-year-old teacher was hit in the thigh.
Marseille prosecutor Nicolas Bessone said the boy injured the two staff members on the first floor, then went to the second floor and fired twice, once towards the floor in front of a teacher and once into an occupied classroom, hitting the chalkboard.
The Marseille prosecutor’s office has opened an investigation for attempted murder. Students were confined within seconds and a psychological support unit was set up at the school, the mayor said.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he extended his full solidarity and total support to the teachers and students.
