Police have issued a public warning about a new type of scam at Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and Cash Deposit Machines (CDMs).
According to police, the fraudsters wait near CDM units and say they cannot deposit their own money. They ask passers-by to exchange cash, often starting with a Rs. 500 note.
Police said that when a victim points out the cash they handed over, the fraudsters deny having received it and take the money.
Police urged the public to take great care when using automated banking machines. Anyone who sees suspicious activity should report it to the police immediately.
Customers who use machines in busy areas are advised to complete their transactions without handing cash to strangers.
