A newly concreted road leading to the family home of a doctor and her husband was opened by Sumith Kumara Dissanayake, a National People’s Power (NPP) member of the Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha, according to a social media post.
The post said Dissanayake attended the opening of the road in person. It did not give the date of the opening, the cost of the work or the source of the funds.
It described the road as serving two houses, the main home of the doctor and her husband, and said it is less than 100 metres long.
The author argued that a road inside a private property can be built with public money in the same way as any other road, and said the doctor, her mother-in-law, the council member and a small group of people were present at the opening.
Background
Pradeshiya Sabhas are local authorities that look after minor roads, drainage, public markets and other community services in areas outside municipal and urban council limits. Members are elected by voters in their areas.
What it means
Residents who want a local road built or repaired can raise the request with their Pradeshiya Sabha member or the council secretary. The post’s claims about the road and its funding have not been independently verified.
