The Nawinna Sports Ground is expected to open to the public by December, Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage said.

He made the announcement after inspecting the ongoing construction work on Sunday. Once completed, the ground will be open to the public free of charge, for residents, athletes and young people.

According to the Ministry of Sports, the project is turning a previously abandoned garbage dumping site into a sports ground with facilities for sport and recreation. The foundation stone was laid on 13 November 2025, and construction has reached its final stage.

The Ministry said the project is part of wider efforts to develop sports infrastructure in the country. It added that local residents and athletes have welcomed the development.
