A march from Kandy demanding the release of Ven. Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thera reached the front of the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo, creating a tense situation at the site.
Gnanasara Thera, the general secretary of the Bodu Bala Sena organisation, is in prison. The marchers, who named their walk the “Freedom March”, are urging the Government to release him.
The march began in Kandy and covered the route to the capital on foot before arriving outside the Presidential Secretariat, the main office complex of the President.
The gathering has the potential to affect traffic and access around the Fort area, where several government offices are located. Readers travelling through the area may wish to check for diversions.
No official statement on the march or the demand for Gnanasara Thera’s release was available at the time of writing.
