A private company linked to an amusement park in Hanwella has been fined Rs. 500,000 by the Avissawella Magistrate’s Court for selling bottled drinking water above the maximum retail price (MRP), the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.
The CAA said the company pleaded guilty on 9 October. Its officers found a 500 ml bottle sold for Rs. 100 at Leisure World Water Parks in Kaluaggala, Hanwella, during a raid on 11 August. The MRP is Rs. 80.
The price was set under Direction No. 96, published in Extraordinary Gazette No. 2492/29 of 10 June, for locally bottled water in PET containers of 500 ml to 999 ml.
The CAA reminded consumers that shops, restaurants, hotels and amusement parks may not charge above the MRP. It advised buyers to check prices and keep receipts as evidence when reporting overcharging.
The authority said islandwide raids will continue. Overcharging can be reported to the CAA hotline on 1977.
