The Department of Motor Traffic (DMT) will strictly enforce the requirement to complete vehicle ownership transfers within 14 days from 1 December, the department said on Friday.
Commissioner General of Motor Traffic Thushara Fernando said owners selling a vehicle should not hand over ‘open papers’, as this could expose sellers to legal and other complications. The department has warned the public against buying or selling vehicles in this way.
He said the required documents must be submitted to the relevant office within 14 days of the transfer.
Fernando also said number plates for vehicles registered after March this year are being printed, and that the issuance of plates for vehicles registered last year is being expedited.
For buyers and sellers, the 14-day limit starts to be enforced on 1 December.
