The Bandarawela Magistrate’s Court fined Bandarawela Rest House, operated by Cluster Holdings (Pvt) Ltd, Rs. 1 million on 7 October for selling drinking water above the legal maximum retail price.

The company pleaded guilty to charges filed by the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA). The CAA said its officers raided the establishment on 23 September and found a one-litre bottle sold for Rs. 200, against a maximum retail price of Rs. 120.

That is Rs. 80, or about 67 percent, above the permitted price.

The CAA reminded hotels, restaurants and other businesses to follow maximum retail prices. It urged consumers to check prices of regulated goods and report violations on the hotline 1977 during office hours.
