The Protection of the State from Terrorism Bill and the Sri Lanka Cricket Bill were presented to Parliament for their First Reading on Tuesday.

Minister of Justice and National Integration Harshana Nanayakkara presented the terrorism Bill, which seeks to repeal and replace the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act No. 48 of 1979.

The Bill sets out a legal framework for terrorism and related offences, including the identification, arrest, detention, investigation, prosecution and punishment of people accused of such offences. It also seeks to protect national security and the public from terrorist acts committed in or outside Sri Lanka, and to stop Sri Lankan territory being used to prepare terrorist activities overseas.

Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage presented the Sri Lanka Cricket Bill, which proposes a new framework for the governance, regulation, promotion, development and administration of cricket. It is intended to restructure Sri Lanka Cricket and to protect the sport from corruption and other malpractices.

Both Bills now move to the next stages of the legislative process in Parliament.
