The Department of Census and Statistics has begun islandwide enumeration for the agricultural part of the Economic Census 2025/26, which will run until 15 December.

Director General K.M.D.S.D. Karunaratne told a media briefing on Wednesday that the work started on 1 October. She urged the public to give accurate information to census officers visiting homes and institutions.

Officials will use tablet computers and Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI), instead of printed questionnaires. The exercise has technical guidance from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The census will collect information on farmers and farmer groups, land and cultivated areas, agricultural inputs, livestock and agricultural infrastructure. It will also cover the Maha season and the 2026 Yala season.

The department said the data will support future planning and development of the agricultural sector.
