The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has seized more than 758 motorcycle helmets without the required SLS certification mark in two nationwide operations, in July and October 2026, the authority said.
The operation launched on 6 October involved 84 raids across 21 districts and led to the seizure of at least 327 helmets. A July operation, on 27 July, covered 98 raids and more than 431 helmets. Together, the two operations involved 182 raids. The CAA said these figures cover only helmets taken from business premises.
The CAA said the helmets are sold without the mark required under the SLS 517 standard. It said identical or similar brands were found in several districts, and that some children’s and smaller helmets also lacked the mark.
Information about misuse of SLS stickers was reported from the Gampaha, Mullaitivu and Mannar districts, and is being investigated.
Investigations have been widened to suppliers, distributors, importers and manufacturers. The CAA said legal action is expected over helmets sold without proper invoices or information to trace their makers and suppliers.
