Vehicle use at the Makumbura Park and Ride facility rose by 54.97 percent in the third quarter of 2026 compared with the first quarter, Deputy Minister Prasanna Gunasena said in a social media post.

The number of vehicles using the facility increased from 34,284 in the first quarter to 53,129 in the third quarter, according to figures Gunasena shared. The daily average rose from 380 vehicles to 590.

Gunasena attributed the increase to the Metro Bus service, which began operating on 21 April with 10 buses alongside the Park and Ride facility.

The scheme lets motorists park private vehicles and complete their daily journeys by public transport. For commuters in the Colombo area, it offers an alternative to driving the full distance into the city.

Gunasena said the facility gives private vehicle users access to public transport that is comfortable, safe and reliable. He said cooperation between the public and private sectors is a key part of building a more efficient transport system.
