The Sri Lanka Cricket Transformation Committee has said remarks by its Honorary Chairman, Eran Wickramaratne, in a television interview were not intended to criticise the International Cricket Council (ICC).

In an interview on the Ada Derana 360 programme, Wickramaratne was asked whether the ICC was wrong to suspend Sri Lanka Cricket in 2023 over government interference. He replied: “Even today there are politicians in some countries.”

In a statement, the committee said the remarks were not intended to cast any adverse reflection on the ICC or on how it has dealt with Sri Lanka Cricket. It said he was explaining how the reform process is being carried out within Sri Lanka’s existing legal framework.

Wickramaratne had defended provisions in the proposed cricket legislation that allow the Sports Minister to intervene in specified circumstances.

The committee said it remains committed to continuous engagement with the ICC as it works on a new constitution and an elected administration for Sri Lanka Cricket.
